Zakumi was conceived on the 16th of June, 1994, the year of South Africa's democracy. The day also coincides with the youth day in South Africa. The name 'Zakumi' is a composition of 'ZA' standing for South Africa and 'kumi' which translates into '10' in various languages across Africa. Coincidentally, the 16th birthday of Zakumi will see South Africa in action against Uruguay.
Zakumi is an attractive and cute green haired leopard. Zakumi symbolises South Africa and the rest of the African continent through his self-confidence, pride , hospitality, social skills and warm-heartedness. Zakumi is also clever and caring. He is a football lover and invites everyone to play with him. He helps in breaking down the language barriers and befriend everybody. FIFA claims that he decided to dye his hair green as he felt it would be the perfect camouflage against the green of the football pitch. Zakumi's Official motto is "Zakumi's game is fair play". FIFA have described him as lively, outgoing, adventurous and spontaneous. Zakumi will make sure that the 2010 FIFA World Cup is a huge, joyful and unforgettable party.
Zakumi was created by Andries Odendaal from Capetown and the mascot costume was produced by Cora Simpson of Cora's Costumes.
