66Wi-Fi Routers
Now, wi-fi routers aren't something you can buy instantly without putting too much thought into it. You will have to do some extensive reading up on models available otherwise you will end up buying what the shopkeeper wants to sell. Go to any mall or shop and ask for a router. The shopkeeper will promptly reply, "Buy an ADSL router, as they are convinced that an ADSL router is faster than a regular router. ADSL router is not required if you are using a LAN based internet connection and most ISPs these days prefer this over the older RJ11(Telephonic) connect. An ADSL router basically has a mode built into it and features both RJ45(WAN) and RJ11 connects. So if you are sure, you would never be using a RJ11 based ISP, it doesn't make sense to shell out more for an unused feature.
If you are shopping for a wi-fi router, please consider wireless N(802.11n) which is the latest protocol and it supports greater speed, better range and coverage over the previous wireless G(801.11g) protocol. ALso, the latest craze seems to be dual band routers. These routers operates on two bands, 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz band. As each band offers a particular bandwidth, the effective bandwidth doubles which means greater throughput. The advantage of a 5GHz is that it suffers no interference while 2.4Ghz is more common being shared by cellular and radio signals, bluetooth devices and such. Keep in mind that there is a difference between dual band and dual band simultaneous devices-the latter allows both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands to be used simultaneously. Also while shopping for a wifi router, keep in mind the distance the wireless client is going to be placed from the router and solid obstacles in between. So if you have obstacles like metals and walls in between, go for dual band or MIMO routers as the offer slightly extended coverage and a slightly more powerful signal.
If you are a discerning buyer, please do some reading up on the chipset used in the router as this affects performance. Atheros chipset for example are poorer performers while chipsets from broadcom and intel are better. However, for some users it will not matter a great deal and many will not notice a difference. Also, after you have bought a wifi router, placing the router at the right place is also important. A clear line of sight is very important and also avoid placing the router near metal objects. So now your house is wi-fied and you can enjoy surfing just about anywhere.
