The game has four grids, two for each player.  On one grid, player arranges ships and records the shots by the opponent.  And on the other grid, the player records their own shot.  Before the game starts, each player arranges a number of ships secretly on the grid for that player.  Ships occupies consecutive square on the grid vertically or horizontally.  The number of squares the ship occupies depends on the type of ship.  According to Milton Bradley version of the rules, aircraft carrier occupies 5 squares, battleship 4, destroyer, cruiser and submarine 3 and patrol boat 2 squares.

Once the ships are positioned, the game continues.  In each round, a player announces a target square in the opponent's grid which is to be shot at.  If a ship occupies that square, it takes a hit.  The opponent tells whether his ships have taken a hit or not and then takes a turn.  The game ends when all of other player's ships have sunk and the other player is declared winner.  There exists many variations of this game and it can also be played online.

I loved that game as a kid! What a blast! These make great gifts for the holidays as well! We keep a few unopened board games in reserve for those last minute gifts for kids.

Wish I could tell you that I loved this game but you know I am the girly girl type, but I sure do know quite a few boys and Men that would love to play a game of Battleship! Hey actually the way you explained it I might have been missing something and should try a stab at a batlestar board game!

No matter how hard you tried you seemed to get a lot of white pegs at the beginning. With my kids I come to realize the patterns they arrange their ships, so the fun is gone.

We had this game as kids too... and now my kids have it. It's been a favorite for years. My husband is still the battleship champ at my house - no one can beat him! Great Christmas gift idea!
