Simply put, a backlink is any incoming link from other sites that links to your hub/site. It forms a very important component of SEO and many search engines including Google as a part of their search engine ranking algorithm. The more the backlinks you have pointing to your site, more the chances of your site getting ranked higher in search. This is a search engine method of deciding which site is more popular and people may want to visit. So more backlinks and more popular you are in the eyes of search engines. Also you're benefited from the traffic from that the site that links to your site/hub.
Now, you can either create your own backlink pointing to your site or you can let them happen naturally. But keep in mind that for backlinks to happen naturally it will take some time. So you have to be patient and you must write quality article as the site linking to your hubs will link to your site for a pupose.
Be cautious when you create artificial backlinks. Make sure that you aren't spamming. Repeated spamming will really hurt you. Make sure you write some content related to the hub you want to link to and intelligently insert your link. This way you would be creating meaningful backlinks.

Simply put, social bookmarking sites allows you to post links of your favorite sites on their web space.And when google introduced adsense revenue sharing few years ago, the whole bookmarking thing was revolutionized. Now, users submitting bookmarks to social bookmarking websites also stands a chance to earn from their bookmarks.
Some bookmarking sites are dofollow and some are nofollow. But personally speaking, it soes not make much of a difference as long as it is driving traffic to your site/hub. But use caution while submitting your own bookmarks, some sites don't like users submitting their own content. Recently this site has been getting a lot of google love and the posts submitted are indexed quickly. They share adsense and amazon revenue on a 50/50 basis. They also have a good referral program. Betty thank you so much for stopping by!! Facebook and Digg are good for driving traffic but for some they don't convert well. Also they don't share revenue. The above mentioned site would not only drive traffic but you would also stand a chance to earn from your own bookmarks. Just try and I am sure you would see positive results.

Which sites encourage posting your own links, such as hubs, and are therefore okay to use your HP name, vs which sites frown on this, and we should therefore have a different user name?
I am pretty sure that all the adsense revenue sharing sites encourage submitting our own content. Some non revenue sharing sites like digg, stumbleupon frowns when you continously bookmark your own content. So I have the same name on all the adsense revenue sharing sites except for Snipsly and Redgage.

One question though, if you don't mind answering. I have joined Xomba and put up 2 bookmarks but it does not ask for my AdSence ID. Does this mean I do not have to enter it somewhere on my profile and will get paid revenue. I joined SheToldMe.com and they asked me to give them my AdSence id.

At xomba, you need to enter your Adsense ID. Just click on my profile, and then click on edit and there you would see "adsense" tab. Click on it and enter your adsense publihser id. And you're done. Another nice bookmarking site I've been using is Ongobee. You get free dofollow backlinks there and earn Adsense and affiliated link revenues for your submitted content.

Xomba has made lot of changes to their site in terms of design and rules. Also, after the Google panda update the site has nearly become useless.
Previously Xomba was only used to direct traffic and earn revenue from adsense. But after panda update Xomba has lost all it's authority and to be honest has become useless.
I guess I will have to update my articles in the series.
I am sorry you had to face rejection. I will shortly update the article with new bookmarking sites.

Ciriya.com is another brand new one too. It's new but it's growing fast and offers social sharing options and hit tracking for each individual post.
